    Hey there,

We have been clearing out our basement and are thinking about putting some tanks down there. Looks are less important since it’s the basement so what experience do any of y’all have with building racks?

Do you have any plans that you have seen? How long do you make your board runs before adding more supports and how much framing do you do?

I’ve been looking at basic 2×4 and plywood construction but wanted to see what everyone’s experience was with this for aquariums specifically.

I built a basics 2 tier that measures 4’x2′. It can comfortably hold a 10 gal turned sideways and a 20 gal long on top. The bottom shelf holds a 33 long tank. It just uses 2x4s and then a flat 4’x2′ board on each level.

There was a really good thread on one of the Reef forums about diy stands. ReefCentral maybe? Was quite long, but gave formulas and plans for stands for tanks up to huge sizes (110+). Probably could get some good ideas about how to construct a rack there, even if you don’t use the plan fully.
